History at Charlton-on-Otmoor Church of England Primary School

Intent

We believe history is important because it helps pupils to understand and interpret the past, and therefore, the present. Through history, pupils develop a deeper cross-cultural awareness and understanding of their own and others’ heritage, through looking at evidence and asking and answering questions. In history, we can analyse successes and failures, which, in turn, teaches us to learn from our mistakes.

A high quality history education will help our pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and about the wider world. We will endeavour through our teaching to inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past, to ask perceptive questions, to think critically weigh up evidence, sift arguments and through this develop perspective and judgement.

Through our history curriculum, pupils will understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Aligned with our strategic aims, our history curriculum will be aspirational for all pupils, equip students with 21st century skills and help pupils to become global citizens by acquiring a greater knowledge and understanding of the past.
