Mathematics at Charlton-on-Otmoor Church of England Primary School

We teach Maths using the White Rose Hub scheme, an approach to mastery with an aim to produce ambitious and a connected curriculum which is accessible to all pupils. Problem solving, fluency and relational understanding are at the heart of the scheme. Our aim is for the pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, to be able to reason and problem solve.

To learn mathematics effectively, some things have to be learnt before others. All of our teaching is built on previous knowledge and pupils have ample opportunity to develop relationships between the topics. Each year group follows a  curriculum which is split into blocks. Within each block we then have small steps which are sequenced in order of difficulty and dependency. Each step builds carefully from the previous step, building on pupil’s prior knowledge to develop new skills.

We use the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach to help pupils understand mathematics and make connections between different representations. We place great emphasis on mathematical language and questioning so pupils can discuss the mathematics they are doing, and so support them to take ideas further. As well as being fluent mathematicians we want pupils to love and learn more about mathematics.
