Newsletter 28th February 2020

This half term we will be looking at the following value:

  • Forgiveness

Dear Parents,

We have had an exciting first week back at school. Our whole school theme this half term is 'Eco Warriors' and within the school there have been lots of transformations and innovative learning taking place.

In Year 1 and 2, Mrs Styler has been collecting lots of rubbish to inspire children to recycle and explore how to protect the planet. In Year 5 and 6, Mrs Ellam has turned the classroom into a rainforest as part of their work on the climate and biomes. On Thursday I visited the Year 3 and 4 class and was very impressed with their ability to classify different types of animals, using keys to extract relevant information.

This half term the school value is forgiveness. During my Headteacher assembly, I read the story of the Prodigal Son and we discussed what it means to forgive and why forgiveness is important not just within school but in all aspects of life. Throughout the term, staff will be looking to award house points to children who demonstrate this value.

I would like to inform all families of Charlton that over the half term break Joyce Ushaw passed away. Joyce was a big part of the school community for many years, she would often come in to lead assemblies, support the school, giving up her own time and was a very popular and respected member of the community. She will be missed.

I hope you all have a great weekend and the weather cheers up.

Mr Griffin

- Attendance

The attendance this week is 97.73%.

- Parents' Evening

Please don't forget that the parents' evening booking opens on Monday 2nd March and will close on the 15th March. You can access the booking through the App or via the website once you have logged in. If you cannot remember your logging details, please contact Françoise at Reception. Thank you.

- World Book Day

This year at Charlton we will be marking World Book Day on Friday 6th March. Rather than dressing up as book characters, we are going to decorate a potato as a book character instead!!  We are asking that each child brings a potato into school on Thursday 5th March ready to decorate on Friday 6th March.  Have a look at the examples below and have a think about some book characters during the holiday.

Our World Book Day coincides with the school's Open Morning and you are invited to help your child decorate their potato book character during this time.

During half-term we challenged the children to get a photo of themselves doing some Extreme Reading! - this could be a photo of your child reading sitting on the car, or reading hanging upside down on the climbing frame reading.  Remember safety first, of course, but there will be a prize for the most creative extreme reading photo.  The deadline to send your photo is Tuesday 3rd March. Send your photos to parents@charltonono.co.uk.

At the end of the day - 3pm - you are welcome to come into school and share your favourite picture book, or an extract from your favourite children's novel, to a small group of children.  It is wonderful for children to see their parents at readers.

After school, the PTA will be joining in the book fun and holding a second-hand book sale where tea, coffee and cakes will also be on sale.

- FSU

The FSU children had a fantastic morning celebrating Shrove Tuesday this week. A huge thank you to Mr Kendall for coming into the FSU to make pancakes with all the FSU children. We really appreciated his time and expertise and loved eating them at snack time with healthy and tasty toppings.  The children also made jelly on Tuesday as part of their learning into how mixtures and ingredients change when heated or cooled. (to see more pictures, please go to the school life app or website under: News & Events/ Gallery)

- The "Eat Them to Defeat Them" Campaign

Our school is supporting the "Eat Them to Defeat Them" campaign to encourage children to eat more vegetables. Its award-winning and proven to make eating vegetables more fun.

The campaign has been created by Veg Power in partnership with ITV, Channel 4, and Sky and is well supported by celebrities and chefs. The children will be introduced to the campaign on Monday in their assembly with Mr Griffin and then will bring home reward charts and sticker packs in their bookbags next week. We will be giving out stickers to those children eating vegetables in their lunch boxes and from their school lunch. We will be keeping track of the vegetable consumption in a whole school progress chart and aiming to reach the top by the end of the five weeks. If the children complete the chart they will receive a whole school treat.

Each week we will be focusing on a different vegetable but consumption of all vegetables are encouraged!

Week commencing:
2nd March- Peas,
9th March- Sweetcorn,
16th March- Broccoli,
 23rd March- Tomatoes,
30th March- Peppers

The collections will be in 5 local Tesco stores: LANGFORD Express, BOWMONT SQ Express, SOUTHWOLD Express, HART PLACE Express and the Bicester Superstore.  Please tell all your friends, family, neighbours etc about the scheme and let’s see if we can be placed 1st, the money will make such a difference to the school.

- Kidlington Centre

The Kidlington Centre is proud to be putting on the ‘Have a go’ event aimed at introducing Kidlington children aged 5-16 years to the wonderful array of clubs on their doorstep which they might not even know about!

The children will be able to speak to a range of clubs to see if there is anything they are interested in joining. There will be some taster activities for them to try too.

It could give the children a new hobby with new skills, new friendships and lots of fun at very little cost!

Come and see if there is something they would like to try on Sat 21st March 2020 10am-2pm.

Once they have spoken to the clubs or taken part in taster activities they will be given a card, which will enable them to have a FREE go on a 7.5m high climbing wall based outside the Kidlington Centre.

Come on over and ‘Have a Go!’
