Continuous Provision in Key Stage 1
Like many other KS1 classes we are changing how we teach National Curriculum content. We are using a Continuous Provision approach with short inputs and enhanced activities that children will be able to access, practise and process at their own level and pace. Adults will also work in smaller targeted groups, pitched at the right level for each child, whether that’s to support or broaden understanding and competency, as a follow up to inputs. e.g. in maths and writing.
Why are we doing this?
Research and Ofsted are now recognising that there are many benefits to having
continuous provision in KS1. Some of the benefits are:
• It supports the transition from FSU to KS1.
• It encourages independent learning and taking responsibility for their learning.
• Children learn best through play, and it deepens their understanding.
• Provision supports all areas of the curriculum.
• Provision is accessible for all learners to complete independently - allowing opportunities for differentiation.
• It allows for problem solving and critical thinking.
• It supports social and emotional development.
• It encourages more effective ‘hands on’ learning.
• It increases motivation and engagement.
• It builds on executive function skills. E.g. retaining simple rules, following 2-step instructions and progression between tasks with decreasing guidance
