Newsletter 27th September 2019
This month we will be looking at the following value:
It has been an exciting week at Charlton. On Monday we performed in front of many of you as part of the annual Harvest service. The children sang and spoke confidently; some for the first time in the church. It was great to see the progression in the acts from Early Years to Upper Key Stage Two.
On Wednesday we were joined by the Roots to Food Company. This was a very exciting day, giving all children the opportunity to cook fresh products, learning about how to be safe in the kitchen as well as what makes a healthy and varied diet.
On Thursday, our year 5 and 6 children represented the school at a rugby festival. Despite not winning, the children worked well as a team and represented the school with pride.
We ended the week in our traditional way with the celebration assembly.
Have a great weekend
(The children in year 5 and 6 cooked a Mexican Chilli Beef with Chocolate dish and Stromboli bread. The atmosphere at school was amazing, all the buddy cooks were very excited by the opportunity to cook the "beef with chocolate" recipe. It tasted even better than they thought it would!)
- Rags to Riches
Gentle reminder about the Rags to Riches' collection on Monday 30th September at 9.00am. Thank you very much for your support.
Next week the children will be writing their first NEWT (Now Everyone Writing Together) of the year. They will be writing a recount.
- FSU will be writing a recount of their bus trip on Thursday, once they have been. So please can parents talk to their child about the trip on Wednesday night.
- Y1/2 will be writing about Harvest,
- Y3/4 will be writing about their Roots to Food cooking experience and
- Y5/6 will be writing a letter related to our WW2 topic.
Recount texts can come in the form of diary entries, newspaper articles and letters, and usually have the following features:
- Written in chronological order
- Written in the first person (diaries and letters)
- Written in the past tense
- Use time connectives
Please take some time to talk to your child about their writing focus. Encourage them to think about the exciting vocabulary they could use, how they could start sentences in different ways, time connectives they might use, how they want to make their reader feel and how they are going to achieve this.
Research shows, and we noticed too last year, that children who experience quality talk before writing enjoy writing more and make greater improvements in their writing than those who don't. We appreciate your support with this and we hope you enjoy the conversations you have with your child.
Attendance for this week is 95.48 %.
News week is PIRATES' week at CAST. Activities will include role play, dressing up, making pirates' hats & flags, eye patches, etc...
They will be looking for treasure, and generally having a swashbuckling time. Come and join us me hearties!
- Yr 5/6
On Thursday, Year 5/6 took part in a Tag Rugby Festival at Cooper School. They all played brilliantly, showed immense respect for their opponents and were gracious in defeat. The improvement In their game from their first match to their final match was impressive. Well done Y5/6, you did yourselves proud.
- Cupcakes Fund Raising
Today Yr 5/6 raised an amazing £91.50 towards their trip. Thank you to all the bakers and thank to everyone who supported them.
- PTA News
Rags to Riches bag collection is scheduled for Monday morning so please have a final clear out over the weekend and bring filled bags into school by 9am on Monday 30th September, the bags will be collected later that morning. Remember no school uniform in the bags. Our last collection made £138.85, let’s see if we can surpass that amount this time!
School Cookbook, please keep sending in your recipes, we have already received a few and they look fantastic. They can be any recipes, maybe your Grandma has a tasty fruit cake recipe which has been handed down through the generations or your Dad makes a mean spag bol that the family all enjoy together on a Monday night. The recipes can be healthy snacks to indulgent treats, mid-week meals to dinner party extravagance. Send the recipe with pictures – photographs or hand drawn. Deadline for recipes is Friday 11th October. We aim to have the book ready for Christmas so please send them in via school office or email asap.
Harvest Auction – a letter was sent home via book bags this week. This is a great fundraiser for both the school and church, profits will be split 50:50. Please donate whatever you can, maybe a homemade cake or jar of jam or a promise of babysitting for 1 night, or walking someone’s dog, a couple of hours gardening etc. I’m sure everyone has got something they can offer. Let us know either through the school (office or email) or contact Charlotte Devlin on 01865 331339. This is a real community event, posters and flyers will go around the villages from next week but let neighbours know, they may wish to contribute. The Nut Tree are hosting so sure to be a great night.
Amazon Smile – the Amazon charity site. We have a fundraising account with Amazon Smile they have just announced that you can now support our charity more easily through the Amazon shopping App. You will need the latest version, when you log in go to settings and select Amazon Smile and follow instructions and select your charity as Charlton on Otmoor School. With Christmas looming this could be a fantastic money raiser for the school and at no cost to yourself, so if you shop online with Amazon please take a moment and give it a go and let friends, family etc know to.
