This half term we will be looking at the following value:

- Letter from Mr Griffin

Dear Parents,

At the end of the Spring term we will be saying goodbye to our Deputy Head, Mrs Bending and our year five and six teacher, Mrs Ellam. In response to these departures, we have been advertising for two exceptional teachers to join our team.

I am delighted to inform you that after several weeks of recruitment involving virtual and face to face interviews, we have appointed two extremely talented teachers. Miss Cora Phillips will be arriving after Easter from St Faith's Church of England Primary School with Miss Laura Airey joining in September from Bovingdon Primary Academy.

Both candidates stood out during the interview process due to the high standard of their teaching and substantial subject knowledge. Cora and Laura are currently teaching at Outstanding schools with an enviable reputation and will be bringing a wealth of experience and skills to Charlton.

As part of the transition process, I will be arranging opportunities for parents and children to get to know their new teachers; details will be shared after the half term break. I am sure you will agree that this is a very exciting time for the school.

We have implemented a new approach for homework in Spring 2. Miss Sandford has created a set of exciting challenges for you to do as a family each week. These challenges will be optional but we hope that by taking part, it will bring families together, get children outdoors and add fun to the remote learning experience. I hope you enjoy this fresh approach to learning. This will replace the usual homework grids.

As we approach the half term break, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your continued support.

Have a great half term.

Mr Griffin

- Wellbeing Activities by Ms Sandford

Due to the Covid situation, the children's wellbeing has become even more important which is why the school has decided to provide some Wellbeing activities. These are to replace the Homework grids that teachers might have sent out. They will run for 6 weeks and you will find below the PDF file of the first week. They will also be put on the children Google Stream.

-Message from Mrs Ellam

At Charlton we take internet safety seriously so we used this week's Safer Internet Day to remind the children about the ways to stay safe on line.
This link will take you to some activities and information that you might like to do at home to continue the work we have done in school.  You can also find information about staying safe online on our school website here.

- Oxfordshire Libraries

To keep us all reading Oxfordshire Libraries are offering a click and collect service.  Here is an extract about it from their website...

Complete the click and collect form. Tell us what sort of books you like to read and choose a library collection point from the list.

Our experienced and knowledgeable library staff will handpick up to six books that fit your interests and preferences. We aim to meet your request within 24 hours. We'll contact you when your collection is available, and you'll have three days to pick them up.

You may have read the book we choose for you.

We will aim to select books that you'll enjoy. But even if we do not always hit the mark, it could be fun and exciting. Who knows, you might discover something new!

This service is only available to library customers who have a library card. If you are not a library member, it's easy to apply to join the library. We'll email your library number to you.

- New recycling blister medecine packs initiative at Superdrug Bicester

TerraCycle - the global initiative set up to tackle the problem of hard-to-recycle waste materials - has partnered with Buscopan, Dulcolax and DulcoEase to create the Medicine Packet Recycling Programme.

Consumers can now recycle any brand of empty medicine blister packets by dropping them off at their nearest participating pharmacy: Superdrug Bicester.

Social responsibility

As well as the social responsibility of diverting this waste which would otherwise end up in landfill or incineration, every collection raises money for a good cause. Once pharmacy teams sign up to the initiative, they'll be sent a collection box and be rewarded with 100 TerraCycle points for each kilogram of blister packets they collect, with each point worth £0.01 for a charity of their choice. Superdrug Bicester's Charity is Mary Curie.

This latest programme joins a long list of TerraCycle recycling initiatives, many of which tackle the packaging of items commonly sold in pharmacies such as personal care, baby food pouches, dental, cleaning products and personal protective equipment (PPE). Collected waste is free to send back to TerraCycle using printable UPS labels. The more pharmacies sign up to, the more TerraCycle points they can earn, which means more money for good causes. It will also go some way to cementing their reputation in the community for their positive environmental impact.
